What’s coming up at the Moncrieff

Variety shows

THIS form of entertainment made its way from the Victorian era, from stage to radio and television.

The popularity of live variety artists peaked between the '40s and the '80s, and the industry has been impacted largely by the world of television and the internet, plus there are now fewer venues with live artists.

The one group that has been around forever is, of course, Wickety Wak, and it remains popular. Wickety Wak comes to the Moncrieff on July 24. See below.

MOVIES this week are Jurassic Park and Inside Out.

Thursday, July 16 - Wednesday, July 22

Comedy drama (PG)

In Aloha, a celebrated military contractor (Bradley Cooper) returns to the site of his greatest career triumphs in Hawaii. There he reconnects with a long-ago love (Rachel McAdams) while unexpectedly falling for the hard-charging air force watchdog (Emma Stone) assigned to him. From Academy Award-winner Cameron Crowe, the writer-director behind such films as Jerry Maguire and Almost Famous, Aloha also stars Bill Murray, John Krasinski, Danny McBride and Alec Baldwin.

Hot Pursuit

Thursday, July 16 - Wednesday, July 22

Action comedy (M)

Straight-arrow policewoman Cooper (Reese Witherspoon) is excited and thrilled about her next assignment.

Her task is to escort Daniella Riva (Sofía Vergara), a wisecracking Colombian beauty, from San Antonio to Dallas so both she and her husband can testify against a drug lord. Plans go awry when Mr Riva gets ambushed, leaving Daniella a widow. Cooper and her witness must now use their wits to escape from crooked cops and murderous gunmen while not killing each other in the process.
