Police tinnie leads the charge up the Brisbane River

IN true Queensland style it was a tinnie which was tasked with leading the police flotilla up the Brisbane River as part of final G20 security preparations.

The Brisbane River will be closed to all recreational vessels from today between the Story and Go Between Bridges ahead of this weekend's G20 World Leaders Summit.

Queensland Deputy Police Commissioner Ross Barnett said on Thursday it was the largest flotilla of police vessels ever paraded down the river in the services' 150 year history.

He said eighteen vessels including the newly-commissioned Brett Irwin took part in the display.

"The vessels ranged from our two magnificent class one 22m catamarans right down to our ribs and fast response craft," he said. "All those vessels will be on the water 24/7 throughout the summit.

"One of the catamarans will be tied up adjacent to the Brisbane Entertainment and Convention Centre and will act as another command facility should we need one."
