$8 Kmart product ‘as good as a Dyson’
A NSW mum has shared her new tool for tackling the dirt that accumulates on her floors each day, and for once, it's guaranteed not to break the bank.
Shirley Towan, from Bombala, in regional NSW town, told news.com.au she had spotted a write up about an $8 broom from Kmart that cleaned carpets.
"I instantly knew I had to have one so I asked my friend to pick one up for me on Sunday," Shirley said.
She was looking for a fix for a hallway running through her home that "no amount of vacuuming has ever cleaned properly".
The mum-of-two, who owns a craft store, invested more than $700 on a Dyson vacuum but the high powered device didn't clean the light coloured carpet like she wanted to.
On Monday, she put the $8 broom, which has soft, rubberised bristles, to the test.
"When I first used the broom I was in absolute disbelief that there was so much debris left behind after constant vacuuming," she said.
"I was actually slightly embarrassed that all that stuff came out of my carpet!"
Suggesting a simple broom could function better than an almighty Dyson vacuum cleaner is a bold claim.
But Shirley was adamant her new purchase was "just as good as a Dyson".
Shirley said while she still uses her Dyson everyday, the Kmart broom "just gives the extra deep clean that I need".
She shared her success on a popular Kmart Facebook group, saying she was in "total shock".
"I wanted to share it with other mums to let them know that an $8 broom can be amazing for carpet," she said.
The post took off with more than 2.2k people liking it and almost 500 people commenting on how impressive the product was.
One woman said the sight of all the dirt the broom had managed to collect made her "skin crawl".
"Just seeing evidence that a vacuum doesn't pick up all the stuff. I'm getting this broom!" she wrote.
Shirley said she was absolutely "gobsmacked" by the reaction to her post.
"I just wanted to show a few mums how good it was and now the whole country has got on board," she said.
"Now I'm famous for sharing a pile of fluff!"
