Taking a uniform approach

IF YOU listen carefully you can hear the groans of kids everywhere.

But you will also hear the cheers of glee from parents as they get back their freedom.

That's right, school's back and it's time to start preparing for the exciting year ahead.

And whether your child is starting school for the first time or has grown a few inches since last year, parents across Bundaberg will undoubtedly need to consider school uniforms.

Shawline Embroidery manager Danielle Shaw said it was important to plan ahead because the past two weeks had been extremely busy.

"Some people come in with the uniform policy that the school has given them," she said. "But most of the time we have to direct them to what is required."

Miss Shaw said planning ahead with sizes and quantity needed also would mean greater savings in the long run.

"Buying something that is too tight or short will end in them needing repairing in no time," she said.

She recommends going for a quality, durable product.

"You want to buy something that is made from quality material so that it won't need replacing in three months," she said.

And with summer still with us, hats were a must.

"Buy your child a wide- brimmed hat to give them the best possible protection from the sun. A 7cm-brim is required to be classified as sun safe," she said.

Although winter was some time away, it was better to buy now rather than scramble around in the colder months.

Reactions of students in her store vary, she says.

"The younger ones are very excited but once they get to about Year 6 they're not enjoying it as much," she said
