Our riders compete at Cycling Spectacular
TWO Maryborough riders are halfway through their battle against international cyclists at Bundaberg.
Mobius BridgeLane rider Dylan Newbery and Thomas Hodge are two Fraser Coast Cycling Club starters at the Auswide Bank International Cycling Spectacular, which started yesterday.
The duo are part of an elite men's field that includes the likes of national champion Stephen Hall, two-time Bendigo International Madison cycling classic winner Daniel Fitter, German Hans Pirius, American Zak Kovalcik and New Zealander Corbin Strong.
Newbery enters the annual event after one of his best days on the bike.
The 23-year-old claimed both the elite men's sprinter's and King of the Mountain jerseys at the Cycling Australia Road National Championships in Buninyong, near Ballarat, last weekend.
It capped a tough week for the Mobius BridgeLane rider, who fought hard after a 36th lap crash in the criterium on the opening day of competition.
While the jerseys weren't part of his plan, Newbery stuck with the breakaway in the elite men's road race, then took advantage of his position to earn points.
By the time he reached the finish line, he accumulated enough to win both. Newbery will partner Ben Price in the madison, while Hodge will ride with Queensland Long Squad member Jake Van Der Vliet.
The two-day Cycling Spectacular will be held at Bundaberg Velodrome, with the 100-lap madison the last event on the program.
