On the hunt for mega-mangoes and other strange fruit
IT HAS been a while between giant fruit and vege stories so when we found out about Westlawn resident Chris Hatgis's mega-mango we had to give it an airing.
The retired Waratah cafe owner pulled a whopper off his tree this week coming in at 1.2kg the biggest he believes his 30-year-old Bowen tree has ever produced.
Mr Hatgis said he had been getting an extraordinary amount of larger mangoes this season many up around 900 grams but nothing the size of the monster we are showcasing here.
A medium-sized mango that you might get from the supermarket would weigh on average around 200 grams so that gives you some idea of the extra flesh on this one.
Despite its size he said the larger ones "still tasted good" but he was yet to devour the king-sized one due to its popularity.
"I took it to the club to show the boys this week and there were a group of women there. One came over and asked if she could show it to the girls. Next thing I know they put it up on Facebook."
Mr Hatgis said he's not sure what caused the larger fruit on his tree this season but he thought the substantial pruning he gave it a couple of years ago might have helped it bounce back.
"I took off all the smaller branches, and the ones hanging off to the side. I don't use any fertilisers but maybe the drought and a bit of rain here and there has had something to do with it."
