HOCKEY: A lack of team numbers has seen the women's Premier League hockey cancelled for this season.

Featuring Bundaberg and Maryborough sides, the competition has seen local clubs compete against each other to see who is the best.

Now for the first time in over 20 years, it won't be held with both associations instead focusing on their local competitions.

Bundaberg Hockey Association President Sean Harper said both associations hoped the year off would make the competition bigger and better in future years.

"Team numbers are the issue to make a workable draw (this year),” he said.

"We have decided to concentrate on our local competitions for the region and look at future ideas to hopefully rebuild a better competition medium to long term.”

The men's competition will still remain but be held over one weekend after Easter this year.

At this stage it is unclear where the competition will be held and how many teams are involved.

The BHA are now focusing on their March Past which will kick-start the season next week at Hinkler Park.
