NFL star ‘came out to family before death’
Jonathan Hernandez has revealed that NFL star brother, Aaron, tearfully came out to his mother before taking his own life.
Hernandez was found guilty of the murder of Odin Lloyd, the boyfriend of his fiance's sister, and was being tried for the double murders of Daniel de Abreu and Safiro Furtado, of which he was eventually acquitted.
He took his own life in his cell in Lancaster, Massachusetts in 2017 after being found not guilty of the murders of de Abreu and Furtado.
Days before his suicide, he was outed by a radio program as being gay.
Mr Hernandez told Dr Oz that the Patriots star had opened up to him before about his bisexuality but that he only told their mother while he was in jail.
"All of a sudden they have this conversation and they're both flooded with tears across from each other," Mr Hernandez said.
"The weight of what's on my brother is being expressed and for a mother to be looking at it across from the scratched glass in the zone. Seeing your son who you would have never anticipated being in this situation."
Mr Hernandez also claimed his brother had been sexually abused as a child, but did not say who his abuser was.
In Netflix's new documentary Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez, Dennis SanSoucie, who played football with Hernandez at high school in Connecticut, said they had "an on-and-off relationship from the 7th grade to the junior year of high school."
"I was in such denial … because I was an athlete," he said. "'You mean to tell me that the quarterback and the tight end were gay? He sleeps with other men?' No, it doesn't sit right with people. It doesn't sit right within our own stomach at that time."
Hernandez was also said to have had a prison relationship with inmate Kyle Kennedy, who he gifted a watch to after his death.
Hernandez's fiance Shayanna Jenkins, with whom he had a daughter, told Good Morning America this week that if her partner had said he was gay or bisexual she "would not have loved him any differently".
"I would have understood. It's not shameful, and I don't think anybody should feel shameful on who they are inside, regardless of who they love. I think it's a beautiful thing. I just wish I was able to tell him that," she said.
"You can't describe someone's sexuality without them being here," Jenkins-Hernandez told ABC News. "Although I have a child with Aaron, I still can't tell you how he was feeling inside. No one can."
Ms Jenkins supported Hernandez and fell out with her sister, Shaneah, who was dating Odin Llyod, when he was murdered by the NFL star.
Ms Jenkins has found love again with Hernandez's former team mate, Dino Guilmette.
The couple had a daughter named Giselle Guilmette, in June 2018, a sister for Avielle, the daughter Ms Jenkins had with Hernandez.
Hernandez was later found to have an advanced stage of CTE which causes brain damage and is common among NFL players.
