ALLORA thrower Matthew Denny has won a silver medal in his first international event at open level.
He was second in discus at the World University Games in South Korea with a throw of 62.56 metres, a new personal best.
The winner from Belgium who is in the top-10 in the world threw 64.15m and the bronze medallist 62.54m.
Denny was the only one of the top-eight to throw a personal best.
As he has often told the Daily News, the key in throwing is to peak in the major competitions and he did that to perfection in South Korea on Saturday night (AEST).
The eighth-placed competitor threw 56.2m which shows how far ahead the placegetters are at their best.
At 19, Denny was the youngest in the field of 14 and one of only two 23 years of age or younger.
Despite it being a university games, many of the throwers are in their mid 20s and older.
Denny has started a degree this year at Griffith University.
