Mackay recyclers take out safety gong at state awards
A MACKAY business has won the safety award for small to medium businesses at the second annual Queensland-wide Change Maker Awards.
Anything Environmental was honoured for making the Paget Container Refund Point a safe environment and for the staff’s attention to detail.
The team was also noted for adding more staff when other businesses had lost employees throughout the COVID-19 crisis.
Operator Jason Mordey said his team had implemented many safety systems and COVID-19 measures including a concierge to greet customers and ensure social distancing.
They also introduced a two-way radio system.
“From a safety point of view, it means the front counters can communicate with the forklift drivers,” Mr Mordey said.
He said this ensured forklift drivers were aware of pedestrians at all times.
The Paget business secured the competitive cash for cans scheme contract, which refunds 10c for every eligible container, in August 2018.
Mr Mordey said at the time they wanted to do the scheme right by the community.
In their first nine months of operation, the business had processed 17.4 million containers, he said.
The Change Maker Awards were held as a virtual ceremony presented by former Queensland Origin rugby league player Shane Webcke.
Bowen business Pilchers Recycling took out the People’s Choice Award category.
