Li adopts Aussie tradition to mark Open success

AUSSIES headed to the beach yesterday to celebrate Australia Day and the country's newest adopted sports star, China's Li Na, did the same.

Li cracked a bottle of champagne and waded in the shallows at Brighton as she savoured her history-making 7-6 6-0 win in the Australian Open final against Slovakia's Dominika Cibulkova.

The victory, which came after losses in the 2011 and 2013 finals to Kim Clijsters and Victoria Azarenka respectively, saw Li become the oldest winner of the Open, the 31-year-old surpassing Margaret Court who was 30 when she won in 1973.

The Chinese star also joined an exclusive list of just seven other players who have won a grand slam in their 30s, including greats such as Martina Navratilova, and Serena Williams.

Li will jump to No.3 in the world rankings with the win while Cibulkova will surge 11 places to No.13.
