Julie Bishop condemns unrest in the Ukraine

FOREIGN Minister Julie Bishop has condemned the unrest and violence in the Ukraine overnight, as reports emerge Europe is considering joining America in economic sanctions on the nation's government.

Recent days in the Ukrainian capital Kyiv have seen violent clashes between police and anti-government protestors in which 26 people have been reported killed and hundreds injured.

With violence continuing to increase, the United States has imposed travel restrictions on senior Ukrainian officials, with talks expected on wider economic sanctions.

Ms Bishop on Thursday condemned the latest loss of life, urging both sides to "put an immediate end to the violence", and calling for both the government and protestors to return to political negotiations.

She said Australia's Ambassador to Ukraine, normally based in Warsaw, was currently in Kyiv monitoring developments.
