IRB pulls plug on financial aid for Fiji rugby

THE Fiji Rugby Union's immediate financial sustainability is in doubt after the sport's governing body, the International Rugby Board, suspended all direct financial support with immediate effect.

The IRB said in statement that it would stay that way until the union adopted key financial reporting, administration and governance reforms.

Last year, the IRB committed $1.8 million in direct funding to Fiji, as well as significant financial assistance to play in international tournaments.

It raises doubts whether the Fijian sevens team will be able to attend the upcoming world series events in the United States and NZ.

The IRB was also reportedly concerned that Fiji sevens coach Ben Ryan (pictured) has not been paid for three months. Fiji's acting CEO Berlin Kafoa said Ryan had agreed to forego payment because he understood the union's plight.
