Young driver arrested over death at Manunda
A LEARNER driver is facing serious reckless driving charges over the death of a man at Manunda after a house party.
Officers were called to Hunt St about 4am where a 20-year-old White Rock man was found on the road with significant injuries.
Police had attended for another matter when they discovered the body and immediately began CPR, but despite efforts he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The homicide squad, Cairns Criminal Investigation Branch and other officers launched an investigation into the suspicious death which culminated in an arrest earlier today.
A 21-year-old Parramatta Park man has been charged with one count each of driving without due care and attention causing death and failure to comply with the requirements of a learner driver.
Police had previously confirmed that there had been a party with up to 15 people in attendance at 6 Hunt St for several hours before the young man's body was found and the victim at been among the guests at one stage.
"It appears some form of violence has occurred, the specific nature of which we don't know," Detective Senior Sergeant Ed Kinbacher said on Friday.
"Police were attending in response to other incidents at that location, earlier reports, so (the victim's body on the road) was a chance discovery by the officers.
"The party was still going (when police found the body), it had been going for some time."
The Parramatta Park man will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on January 10.
