TWO years and four months is a long time to wait for another season of the smashingly good Jessica Jones, but wait we have, and wait we must still.

The good news is the Netflix series about the surly, hard-drinking and arse-kicking detective just dropped a teaser trailer and finally announced a premiere date for its second season. The bad news is it's still three months away.

Jessica Jones season two will drop on March 8, which happens to be International Women's Day. The date is clearly deliberate because that day is a Thursday and Netflix shows traditionally debut on a Friday.

It's kind of the perfect day because Jessica Jones is exactly the kind of flawed and complex female superhero we need, even if her razor-edged cynicism makes her a sort of anti-Wonder Woman.

Part of Netflix's stable of street-level Marvel heroes, Jessica Jones first hit screens in November 2015. And by hit, we mean she punched, kicked and all-round destroyed her enemies with her super strength and witty quips.

The show was rightly praised for its nuanced treatment of sexual assault and PTSD, and for just being awesome.

The teaser trailer doesn't give much away, other than reinforce that she's still the testy PI we know and love. At one point, she makes fun of the whole "with great power comes great responsibility" thing by threatening to throw up on someone.

There's a glimpse of Trish and of Malcolm but not of Hogarth or Simpson. The trailer seems to suggest it might dig into the mystery of how Jessica got her powers.

There's also a newbie guy who she's chilling out with, and then later locking lips with - this is Oscar, played by JR Ramirez. All we know about him so far is he's the new building superintendent of Jessica's abode and he's a single dad.

Details are scant on the overall arc of the season but we do know her tormentor Kilgrave, who Jessica killed at the end of the first season, will be back as a guest, though it's not clear if this is a flashback or in her mind or if he has regenerative powers.

Series star Krysten Ritter and executive producer Melissa Rosenberg have both said previously that Jessica will go through more of an emotional wringer this season and they're going to peel back the layers on the chaos of her life.

Ritter revived the character in the team-up The Defenders in August this year but that was a shorter eight-episode run and she had to share the screen with three other superheroes - so to watch Jessica Jones be Jessica Jones, you also had to put up with the drippy Iron Fist.

Jessica Jones season two will debut on Netflix on March 8, 2018.
