Fab day for racing family at Bundy Race Day

RACING: When Mel and Bevan Johnson laid eyes on Fab's Cowboy for the first time, they knew he could be something special.

But they also knew there was work to do.

The Johnson Racing stable got its hands on the gelding when he was unhealthy and just skin and bone, after almost dying because of his mother.

Now, a few years later, he is the King of Bundaberg after winning the Haifa Bundaberg Cup on

Fab's Cowboy in a dominant display, with seven extra kilos over his rivals, won by 4.3 lengths over Heroism and All Host.

"We've always liked the look of him," Mel Johnson said.

"Once we filled him up (when we got him) we knew he could be good.

"He's a beautiful animal."

It also ended the season in the perfect way.

Fab's Cowboy will be ranked the number one horse in Queensland country racing with Johnson Racing the number one stable in the same area.

He has won five of his past seven races.

"He's a tough horse," Mel said.

"He's also not at his peak yet and hasn't realised his full potential."

Mel said the decision to race in Bundy was simple.

"We notoriously place our runners in events we think they can win," she said.

"Any road that leads to us winning is one we take.

"I want to thank the Bundaberg Race Club for great track conditions and their help."

Fab's Cowboy is expected to race in the Townsville Cup this weekend.

In other race results, the Kaye Hill-trained Master Denhro took out race one with I am McLovin (Glenn Richardson) and Amuleto (Jared Wehlow) taking out race three and four.

Bundaberg's Mary Hassam was the only local winner of the day, taking the top three spots in race two with Pearl's Lad winning.

The next race day will be on September 2.
