Diggers hope to take step up
BUNDABERG could have another side in the Wide Bay League by the start of the new season.
The NewsMail can reveal Diggers Football Club is on track to join the competition in either the Wide Bay League or Wide Bay League 2 competition.
"We're definitely looking at it," Diggers president Andrew Halpin said.
"We've signed up a heap of new sponsors.
"We're hoping to at least go into the Wide Bay League 2 competition."
Halpin said he was 75 per cent sure Diggers would have a side in the Wide Bay League 2 competition next year.
The only thing that may stop that are players.
"You need to have the cattle," Halpin said.
"We finished in the semis of the reserve grade (Bundaberg division 2) last season so we have the base.
"We just need a few extra players."
Halpin said the club would be looking for players from other clubs who aren't getting the opportunity to play and would like to move.
He said players who made the move would complement the juniors and senior players at the club.
"We're looking for young dynamic players that would like to come to our club.
"If they aren't getting game time at other clubs, we will give them the opportunities to play.
Halpin said the ideal outcome for the club was to one day get to the Wide Bay League and compete at the highest level.
The side last did that in 2015 in the old Three Cities League.
"Playing in the top competition attracts the best players in the area to your club," Halpin said.
"The thinking is Wide Bay League 2 next year and the Wide Bay League proper in 2019.
A decision on the exact outcome will be made in early January after the club holds its sign-on day.
Sign-on's will start online on January 9 with the club to hold its first training session at Diggers Football Club in Svensson Heights the following day. People interested in playing are welcome to come along.
