Blistering Brendon bowls 'em over

FIRST-season player Brendon Schultz joined some elite company when he claimed eight wickets in an innings for Country/Wests in their under-14 clash with the Brothers U-13 side on Saturday.

Until October, Schultz had made his name in tennis, with his wins last year including the Queensland Junior Masters 11 years and under crown and the 10/U divisions of the Rod Laver and Brisbane Open Age championships.

But he has always also liked cricket, and after being selected in the Bundaberg team for the Wide Bay Primary Schools cricket trials, he put his tennis on hold, honed his skills in the game and has blossomed.

On Saturday morning he opened the batting for competition leader Country and scored 24 before being run out.

Later he came on as seventh bowler and wreaked havoc, claiming an amazing 8-3 from 3.5 overs of "slow medium pace" despite being on a hat-trick only once.

"I'm playing cricket for the summer. Shane Watson is my favourite player and I try to bat and bowl like him, but when it's finished I'll get right back into tennis," Schultz said.

He has been playing two games most Saturdays and he backed up in U-12 in the afternoon to top score with an unbeaten 35.

Schultz will represent Bundaberg in the Wide Bay junior finals this weekend, and he hopes to make the Wide Bay U-12 team next season.
