Big W implements drive up services in Melbourne
Big W will implement contactless drive up services at its Victorian stores, as stage four restrictions have quashed the ability for in store retail shopping.
The major department store will introduce "drive up" services at 22 of its Melbourne stores, following harsh lockdown restrictions imposed by the Victorian government to combat the state's blowout in coronavirus numbers.
Online services will also be available with free deliveries in orders over $40.
Approximately 2000 Big W employees have been impacted by shutdown measures, with a vast majority of staff being transitioned to delivery and online orders.
Big W managing director David Walker said some staff will be redeployed into other areas of the Woolworth's Group.
Big W is owned by the Woolworths conglomerate.
"The majority of our team members are now focusing on safely servicing online orders via home delivery and contactless drive up in our ten hub stores," Mr Walker said.
"We're also working closely with the Woolworths Group, successfully redeploying around 500 team members to Woolworths supermarkets so far."
In the past month, Big W has identified hygiene product sales have increased by 25 per cent over the period, while gaming product sales have surged 70 per cent.
Sporting equipments sales have risen 63 per cent compared to the previous corresponding period and demand for heating has risen 29 per cent.
Big W's nine Victorian regional stores are open, while stores in other states after safe for instore shopping.
"The safety and wellbeing of our team members in Melbourne is our top priority and we're working hard to support our teams through these challenging times," Mr Walker said.
"We ask that we all do our bit to keep each other, and the community safe by wearing mandatory face coverings where it is advised, using hand sanitiser dispensers at the front of stores and keeping 1.5 metres away from other customers and team members."
Big W said it has committed to not cancelling any orders and will hold onto pick up orders until Victorian customers are able to return to stores.
