Award-winning winery hits market for $2.45 million

IT WILL be a sweet parting of the ways. Or maybe dry. Or red, or perhaps white.

But for Robert and Peggy Channon, the past 18 years of building their winery into one of the most prominent names in Queensland wine-making are about to come to a close.

The Channons have put their Robert Channon Wine business on the market, with an asking price of $2.45million.

That's surely a bargain, for eight hectares of vines, cellar door, sheds, a three-bedroom home and the famous Singing Lake Cafe.

"I have nearly reached the 'three-score-and-ten', and we want to leave before that becomes plus-five," Mr Channon said.

"I'm not there yet, but another year or two and I will be slowing down.

"We've been here 18 years; it's a wonderful life and we've had a great time. But the final act is drawing up."

The Robert Channon Wines was the first Queensland winery to receive five stars from James Halliday who has consistently praised the winery's Verdelho.

The Winery complex includes a cellar door with sales and storage areas, a tasting bench, an office and toilets.

There are two open plan steel frame sheds of 576m2, offering storage and a fully equipped wine making area and a refrigerated container.

There is a permanent stage in the wine storage building which becomes the venue known as Swigmore Hall, where the popular concerts are held.

The 100th concert was just held here recently and there is a regular audience at these concerts which also provide good wine sales and consistent profile for the winery.

The magical view of the lake gives the perfect setting for the Singing Lake Café, a commercial kitchen and caters for 60 covers inside with an extra grassed courtyard for al fresco dining.

Nearby is a sound low set three bedroom brick dwelling with kitchen, living areas and a double garage/storage. It has its own access and is currently rented at $280 per week.

This would be suitable for an owner or occupier to live in or for employees to rent. Underground power is in place to a potential new site for another dwelling if required.

There are cattle yards, a loading ramp and crush also on the property.

The location of the winery is ideal, at 32 Bradley Ln, Stanthorpe, it has high exposure and sealed bitumen road on the northern side of the Granite Belt.
