HOW would you like to pocket $5000?

APN, this website's publisher is again running an NRL tipping competition in season 2014, and it costs nothing to enter.

At the end of the home and away season, the leading tipster will collect $5000 cash, while regional winners will receive a $500 Coles Myer gift card.

You certainly don't have to be an expert to have a shot.

Last year's winner, Julie Cowan from Lismore, put her success down to "beginner's luck".

"For me, there was no secret to being successful in a footy tipping competition," Mrs Cowan said.

"I just picked whichever names sounded good, but I always took Manly Sea Eagles."

APN senior sports writer and rugby league expert Wayne Heming has spent more than 30 years covering the game. He said Mrs Cowan's strategy was actually one of the best ways to pick plenty of winners.

"There are no secrets, she is right about that," he said.

"But one thing that usually works well is to anchor your selections throughout the season to a couple of really strong teams.

"So picking Manly every week during last season was a good idea.

"This time around I would be looking at a team like the Roosters and selecting them pretty much every week.

"The other strategy to consider is choosing home teams - history shows they have a clear advantage."

The NRL season kicks off on Thursday, March 6, with a blockbuster clash between the Roosters and Rabbitohs at Sydney's ANZ Stadium.
